It would not be hyperbolic to call the Korean entertainment industry to be hugely appealing and even addictive, especially in the Asia Pacific. Be it their music, their movies or their television series the people of the world and specifically Indians have welcomed them with open arms into their lifestyle. The Korean television industry has a lot to offer to its viewers worldwide but the drama genre is so substantial that it has become their global identity. No matter the genre of the show, the majority refers to them as K-dramas. India has in the last few years seen a lot of Korean web series released here like squid game, true beauty etc and one of the latest entries in it is Snowdrop.
The drama is set in 1987 South Korea between November and December, which was a tense period in the actual history of South Korea as well. The time was June 1987 & the democracy movement was in full motion to force the dictatorship to conduct proper and fair elections in the country. Making it a political, period, crime, thriller. Still, the heart and soul of the show is the romance between its protagonists. And despite being set in such a serious backdrop you can expect to see a passionate love story like the K-dramas are famous for.
There are a total of 16 episodes that aired in South Korea from December 18, 2021 - to January 30 of 2022. And now it has been released worldwide across different streaming platforms.
The casting of snowdrop is nothing short of eye candy for sure. With the most glamorous addition of k-pop sensation Kim jisso of Blackpink. But that's not all, there are so many other actors and actresses that make for a superb ensemble on screen. Let us look at who's who in Snowdrop,
And many more.
The basic flow of the show's story is like this,
The year is 1987 and South Korea is on the verge of a democratic uprising against its dictatorship rule, with the demand for a free and fair election and restoration of democracy. The stakes are high and the tensions between the North and the South Korean governments are at an all-time high. South Korea's government and its agencies are on high alert for threats from North Korea.
In that very chaos one day Lim Soo-ho is found by Yeong-ro in an Ally, covered in blood and fighting to stay alive.
He's hiding from the government.
And that's how the protagonists meet and the story of their characters and their romance begins. Slowly the secret identity of Soo-ho is revealed to her and then the show takes lots of interesting turns. Their love blossoming amid chaos is very captivating.
Snowdrop episode 1 was released on, 9th February 2022 on Disney+ Hotstar.
It is available to watch in its original language i.e; Korean and the dubbed version in Hindi. Here, there's a slight disappointment for fans of kdramas who watch it in English dubbing including me. But maybe they'll dub this in English very soon as well. But for now, it can be enjoyed in two languages one of which is very widely understood in India.
As of this date, 7 episodes have already aired and new episodes drop every Wednesday at 1:30 pm IST.
IMDb rating of 9/10 is enough on paper to establish that it is a show loved by its audience. But some people found this show to be a little off in many aspects, especially historical accuracy.
But overall it is a good watch if you're into melodrama, romances, thrillers, and dark comedy.
