The plot of the show revolves around the tale of Lord Shiva. This Lord Shiva story depicts his journey from the ascetic to the family guy.
During Lord Brahma's creation of the world, Adi Shakti separates Shiva from his Ardhanarishvara form. So, to mold the universe, she takes various births to marry Shiva, but she fails 106 times, causing Shiva to become an ascetic. As a result, Lord Brahma proposes that his mind-born son Prajapati Daksh satisfy Adi Shakti and request that she incarnate as his daughter. Sati, Daksh's daughter, is born to her. Meanwhile, Shiva (Mohit Raina, Kailasanathan serial cast) amuses Daksh by severing Brahma's fifth head. Sati falls in love with Shiva and eventually marries him, which enrages Daksh. As a result, in his Yagna, Daksh humiliates Shiva in front of Sati and unable to bear it any longer, sacrifices her life once more. As a response, Shiva orders Virabhadra to behead Daksh, but he is subsequently resurrected at Prasuti's request, and Shiva enters a centuries-long state of intense meditation.
Adi Shakti then takes the form of Parvati, the daughter of Himavan and his wife Menavati. She, like her parents, is aware of her divinity and grows up in Dadichi's Hermitage, where she begins to refer to Mahadev as her husband, something Menavati, as a concerned mother, strongly opposes. Then in the Kailasanathan serial, Parvati grows up and realizes her god's existence. She tries to persuade Mahadev that it is his wife Sati, but he rejects her, burning Kamadev and cursing Parvati in the process. Parvati eventually accepts to marry as per her mother's order, Menavati's, wishes. But finally, Parvati and Himavan persuade Menavati of Parvati's identity, and Menavati agrees to the marriage. Parvati meditated for 3000 years to persuade Mahadev to marry her. Finally, Mahadev and Parvati tied the knot. Afterward in the Kailasanathan serial, Mahadev teaches Parvati tantric knowledge that allows her to take various forms such as Nav Durga, Mahavidyas (Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshvari, Tripura Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala), and Matrikas to destroy various demons such as Raktabija, Mahishasura, Shumbha Nishumb and later, in the Kailasanathan serial Shiva and Parvati welcome Karthikeya, Ganesha, and Ashok Sundari to their family.
The Kailasanathan serial Malayalam also shows all forms of Mahadev such as Virabhadra, Swami Adiyogi, Aghori, Bhoothnath, Vaidynaath, Bhairav, Rishabh, Pashupatinath, Kaal Bhairav, Baba Lokhnath, Shambhu, Nat Bhairav, Natraja, Martand, and others to sustain the universe, teach humans moral values, and during the Kali Yuga, the Kailasanathan Malayalam also investigates several folk legends about Lord Shiva to teach people moral values and ways to obtain moksha. By inhabiting many human avatars, the ultimate God saves regular people from malevolent demons and uncaring tyrants. The narrative of the twelve Jyotirlingas is also fully depicted.
